Today, I was helping a customer find some shoes. When I brought her a size, she got a phone call. I motioned to the shoes and mouthed, "Bigger size" so I didn't interrupt her. She yelled, "Give me a fucking minute," and stormed out. About 5 minutes later, I realized she'd stolen the shoes. FML
I agree, your life sucks 13 765
You deserved it 1 476

Saxicolous tells us more.

Also, (not enough room to mention this in the FML) it wasn't a casual phone call, she was having a very heated (and obviously fake I realized afterwards) argument with some guy about how she was or was not just at some restaurant with another guy. She was screaming and cussing, the whole shabang! It was, in hindsight, a very effective distraction

Thieves are really good at what they do. She has probably done this many times. They play on the inherent politeness of people.

You know what they say. "If the shoe fits"

Steal it from Payless and give it to your kids, for Christmas!

I am the OP! When we called security they told us that she had just done this to another store too, she was definitely a pro

It's amazing what people get away with because they know most people get uncomfortable in those situations. It's a quick way to get people to look the other way, that's for sure!

I work in the shoe department too. When customers do this to me (jumping on the phone while I'm assisting them) I'll stand there holding the shoes, waiting for them to finish their call. It's the same as talking on the phone at the registers to me. Don't ask for my help and then expect me to tip toe around you catching up with your friends.

I stood there for a few seconds until she yelled at me, I thought she was just a bitch and not a seasoned thief so I walked away! I'm honestly the slightest bit impressed with how clever that was

If she left with the new shoes on, did she leave her old shoes behind?

She must have slipped them into her bag! (The shoes she wore into our store were the ones she just stole from another store in the mall)

I hope she shoplifts from the wrong store and gets caught. That scumbag bitch needs to learn that you have to earn what you want in life.

That's real smart announcing that online retard.

I think this is definitely the time and place to joke about this.

Thief's do this all the time. Gotta pay attention to what the customer is doing when they try to distract you.

And this customer interaction was the first step into the OP becoming the Canadian Al Bundy.
