Bunch of bankers

Today, my bank overdrafted my account to pay a bill that isn't due until next month. When I called them, they said they would fix the mistake, but I have to restore the account to zero before they'll give me my money back. So, I have to pay for my own money with the money they won't give me. FML

Get a new bank. And when you close out your account at this bank, make sure they know the exact reason why. Don't let them sweet talk you back in. Be firm and go to another bank. Write a letter to the president of the bank with your complaint, publish it in a blog, on Facebook, on Twitter; coming here to FML was a step in the right direction.

Any time you suspect the bank has done anything wrong- and really this goes for ANY potential legal issue, not just money- document, document, document! If you can't or won't, well, this is one of life's more costly lessons.

Keep calling and bug them. Complain to the manager until you get it back. They can't just take your money.

I work for a bank and this is a huge pet peeve. Your bank didn't overdraw the account- the company that you have an automatic bill pay set up with. Your bank has to work with the company to get your account credited, essentially doing the dirty work for you. Do as they ask so you can get the money back, and next time go through the company! And yes, even if you go through the company, you can contact the bank and they will give any overdraft fees back.
