Today, I went to my retail job to buy some clothing. As soon as I walked through the doors, my manager yelled at me for not being in appropriate work clothes. I tried to explain that I was off the clock but he was having none of it. I got written up. FML

You really shouldn't be taking any of that... He should've known you were off the clock in the first place. If that sort of thing happens a lot, I'd suggest finding somewhere where you'd be more appreciated.

You were not even due to be at work. He can't do that. So when he wrote you up, did you sign it? If you did, you deserve it. If not, then I suggest you learn to stand up for yourself a little more and don't let it get that far in the future.

I am sorry but is it so hard to say"I am not working today!" in a stern but respectable tone. I think if you just said it without beating around the bush he would have gotten the idea and left you alone. If not go to HR and explain to them. But I would not have even followed him to sign the write-up sheet. I would have just shopped around. And if he had a problem with it maybe he would listen as to why you are shopping and not going with him. Then maybe he would listen.

But OP did say that they weren't working that day. If the boss is so mean and irritable not to listen to OP in the first place, no tone of OP's can fix such an attitude.
