By Anonymous - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I was so excited to play the video game I just bought, I decided to read the manual in the game. I went over the seizure warning and thought to myself, who the hell gets a seizure from playing a video game? Apparently I do. FML

Heed the warning, bro. They don't make this shit up.

When will people remember this? Just because ALL THE FMLs AUTOMATICALLY start with "Today", it doesn't mean that they happened the same day! Anyway, that sucks a lot, especially if you're a big gamer - I'd be bummed if it were me. I'm curious about what game it was now, though.

If it was only one seizure that occurred while playing a video game, and he never went into status epilepticus, he would have been released from the hospital the same day. They do your EEG within 2 hours maximum when you go in for a first generalized seizure, and then your MRI as soon as possible after that. If the MRI is clear, you go home. If the EEG shows seizure activity, or more seizures, you get medicine and go home. Its far more likely that he would be posting this on the day he had the seizure, than on the next day, when he would be sleeping or extremely confused from his post ictal state.

Pulp_Diction, To have epilepsy you must have two seizures that are EPILEPTICAl. There are non-epileptical seizures - usually provoked by things like stress or running, staying up for hours at a time, or running marathons. You can have a thousand of those and still not have epilepsy. Epilepitical seizures require a higher amount of electricity in the brain than NES (aka psychogenic seizures) and the cause of epileptical seizures is unknown, though they may be triggered by things like flourescent lighting Laci Lani, please learn a little about seizures before you speak again. 1 in every 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime. Yet only 1-2 percent of the population has epilepsy 2) You do not recover a few moments after the seizure. That is the interictal phase which typically lasts anywhere from 3 hours to 1 week, with 1-3 days being most common. Its not unheard of for it to last 3 months though. Then you have the post ictal phase, which is where your brain rewires itself to prevent future seizures. It is unusal for the postictal phase to last less than 7 hours, and during this period the person may sleep the entire time, be unable to accurately carry on a conversation, be able to speak but not write (or vice versa), have excellent verbal skills but be unable to add 1 plus 1 etc MRI's also have nothing to do with determining seizure focus. They do MRI's to rule out factors other than epilepsy. And many people with epiilepsy never find their seizure focus EVEN after having the EEG where they drill holes in your skull and put the electrodes directly on your brain. Furthermore, from the OP's writing its more than obvious he had a generalized seizure, and the type of seizure that has a focal point is a partial seizure. Since his writing makes it clear he didn't know he had epilepsy, its highly unlikely he would have said "Hmm, I suddenly have a slight odd feeling in my head/stomach/hand, I'm having a seizure from this game and better stop playing it" as would be a similar situation with someone who has focal seizures. Also most partial seizures do not show up on EEGs

"Who the hell gets a seizure from a video game"....My question is --Who the hell reads the game manual along with the warning and warranty manuals?-- haha

Geez, is everyone on here an epileptic genius? Anyway, sorry about that. Maybe they can do a test on you like in the book Skin by Ted Dekker...

*agrees with 35 Laci, please visit www.epilepsyfoundation.org to learn about seizures before you tell anyone else about them - and then make an effort to ensure that everyone you spoke to about them before gets accurate information I have complex partial seizures in the anterior region of the left frontal temporal lobe. It took 3 EEGs before seizure activity showed up on any them - even though I had been being driven home from work because I was too exhausted to read children's books aloud, and there were days I literally couldn't sit up in bed. All the tests were showing I was healthy. if not for my past history, I still wouldn't have an epilepsy diagnosis, because I wouldn't have known to keep pursuing the neurologists - the first one I saw (state board certified) was a total idiot, who actually ruled out epilepsy based on one clean EEG and sent my other doctors letters stating that it was impossible for me to be having seizures, the neurologist and epileptologist I have now both reported her to the state board for doing that because they said that with my history, and description of what was happening, she should have put me on medicine before that EEG even happened. The epi said I was one of the worst case of epilepsy he had ever seen - and just the week before I had a neurologist tell me that I wasn't having any seizures. When they finally picked up my seizure activity on an EEG, it was so severe that it was "off the charts." This after 2 normal EEGs on days I felt much worse than on this one. Also the seizure focus has absolutely ZERO effect on the severity of epilepsy. I have the exact same seizure focus I did when I was 6 months old - I had three seizures then, didn't need medicine. I have the exact same seizure focus I did when I was 3 years old. I wasn't put on medicine then, and was largely fine,. I stayed on medicine for 4 months and then was pulled off it because of side effects, was fine then. I have the exact same seizure focus I did when I was 14 and went into a state of nonstop seizures for 6 hours, was put on medication, and then went to the movies every week for the next few years, and watched tv most every night. I have the exact same seizure focus right now, as back then, and right now I can't be in the same room as a television, can't go into wal-mart, lowe's, rite-aid, or half the buildings on the university I attended for the last 7 years without having a seizure from them. Seizure focus is nothing more than a name for the location in your brain where your seizures start. No one knows why seizures suddenly get worse, especially after years of not having any seizures at all and not needing medicine, or why some people have epilepsy to such a greater degree than others, and if you figure that, you'll likely get the Nobel Prize in science

Who said this was his first seizure? Epilepsy often goes misdiagnosed for years as things like ADHD, a child just not wanting to pay attention, someone wanting to be the class clown. He could have been having SP and absence seizures for years, before this game triggered a tonic clonic. It typically takes a child with 100 absence seizures a day 5 years before anyone notices they are having seizures - that hardly sounds like a very mild case of epilepsy. Every seizure increases your chance of having another seizure, and every seizure incurs the risk of brain damage. If he's having a seizure from a video game on sale in the US, its highly unlikely that he has mild epilepsy, unless he has something else going on - like a brain tumor.

You should always start out with a light session of gaming if you're vulnerable to seizures. It's hard to really tell though if you've never had a seizure before.

I moderated this one ;D Anyway FYL you don't know if that can happen until it actually does. That stinks
