If you explained your situation to the vet & they still charged you, I think you need to change clinics. They don't seem very reasonable or compassionate to me.

I suggest you look into better cat carriers, like armor-plated. Ok, maybe not, but a lock would be helpful.
You are lucky of being alive. Having a car accident is a lot worse that a cat accident.
They should understand the emergency you should show the the bill you had stitches the day of the appt and try and get refunded
