I wait tables in VA. I make 2.13/hr. Thats the federal TIPPED MINIMUM WAGE. Even the government is expecting us to make up the rest to 7.25 in tips. It is not acceptable to tip less than 15% for good service and less than 20% for great service.
THANK YOU. people don't realize that waitresses normally don't get minimum wage because they are expected to get tips. People need to stop being greedy and tip!
Why should customers have to pay for the food and wages. You should probably think how it's unacceptable that you're being paid by your employer less than what it takes to survive.
18% is not automatically added.
Not every restaurant has a gratuity policy.
You know, if you can afford to go out and eat a lovely dinner, you should be able to afford to tip the person who gives you the service. For all those of you who say OP isn't entitled to that money, while you have a slight point, you are also showing your ignorance and lack of life experience. Waiting tables is a difficult job and if you have never done it, then simply don't comment because you have no idea what you are talking about. Unless you have had the delightful experience of waiting on assholes like the Bible-thumpers like OP did, then shut your mouth before you put your foot in it. On the upside OP, charity is supposed to be really big for all religions so maybe God will consider them as being cheapskates and selfish by not giving generously to some one less fortunate than themselves when the situation demanded it. You could be the reason they don't get into heaven... Just saying.
Well at least you still have a. .. salary? from your job? If you're gonna depend on tips to make ends meet, you're gonna have a bad time.
Religion pays where your soul is going to go, don't you feel very rewarded?
So you're saying you can live off 2.13 an hour which is what is the federal minimum wage for waitressing without tips? I'm pretty sure shops don't make that wage.
I'm really amazed by the amount of people on here that have no idea how pay for servers works. The minimum wage is 2.15. Some places are nice and raise that to 3-4 an hour. Servers are expected to make up this money towards the normal wages everyone else makes with tips. If you don't tip your server you're screwing them over because now they can't pay a bill or eat, etc. Same goes for a lot of bartenders as well. Long story short, if you can't afford to tip your servers 15-20% don't go out to eat.
Actually, your employer is screwing you over by circumventing their responsibility to pay for your employment.

That's why restaurants should include gratuity on the bill for large parties. Sorry OP :(
