I really hate being put in the situation where you don't know if you should tell the truth or not. I, however, applaud the waiter. He did neither.

Why do we assume she was fishing for compliments? She may have been looking for something constructive. 'Your lipstick is too dark,' or something similar. The waiter's comment was unnecessarily mean and unhelpful, that's rude even for someone not in a customer service position.
