Today, I threw an elaborate surprise birthday party for my boyfriend of four years. He thought we were going to a quiet dinner but when we arrived, thirty of his friends jumped out and surprised him. Instead of kissing me to thank me, he broke up with me because of how easily I had lied to him. FML

So many FMLs like this and they always make me think the same thing. Either: 1) This is not the whole story. 2) These people are ridiculously stupid/unreasonable. 3) This did not happen.

hmmm while on the surface this seems like an FML, you should really know your bf better than that after 4 years. Some people are shy or get embarrassed in those sort of occasions. I think it would be great, personally, but you should've had an idea that that might be his reaction. YDI

But, as others have mentioned, it was a really silly thing for him to break up a 4-year relationship over. He obviously was wanting to break up anyway, and probably felt even worse when you shot his "break it to her easy" plans to pieces.

Follow up with your word. Breaking up is a tad extreme, but guys tend to be awfully blunt with what we want. My friends threw me a surprise birthday party this year when I told them I didn't want one and it pissed me off. Listen to the kid. It was probably more than just that that he broke up with you over.
