Excuses

Today, a woman on the train demanded I give up my seat for her, claiming it was for people with disabilities. Tired from a long day at work, and seeing she had nothing wrong with her, I asked what her disability was. Apparently, obesity is one. FML

if she can walk back and forth to her fridge all damn day she doesnt need a handicap seat

As you just found out, stupidity is also a disability. A VERY common disability.

Dude, on the other side of the coin I have an unseen disability... It means I'm in constant agony without any outward signals. Really I should be in a wheelchair. I get lots of abuse and glared at for sitting in disabled/elderly seating... I'm not well! Standing and walking hurts! I really should just get "I'm Disabled" Tattooed on my forehead...

I know that feeling, people are assholes. I got yelled at by an elderly woman for parking in a disability spot, when I have it for a reason. I may look young and healthy but I have issues people can't see.

81 how many times are you going to mention Fibro today?

As an obese person, I DO NOT believe that obesity is a disability. Sorry.. actually, let me rephrase that. I do not believe that obesity due to laziness and eating junk food and overeating is a disability. I'll be the first to admit that these are reasons that I'm obese, myself. But I don't use that as an excuse to kick someone out of a seat, use the scooters at Walmart, park in handicapped spaces, NOTHING. I'm sure that lady could have found another seat too, obese or not. She was just being a lazy bitch.

Obesity can't always be helped. It's very linked to genetics. I mean, look at elephants. They're incredibley fat, and all they eat is fruit and grass (as far as I know, anyway). It's just their genetics that makes them that way. While lack of excersise and abuse of food plays a huge part in obesity, it's not always the case of a lazy person eating too much. Disability? I guess it could be classed as a disability, but not a disability that gives them right to a seat. I have a lisp, which is a disability, but I don't claim that I deserve a seat for it. Obesity is similar in that while it makes life harder, it isn't deserving of a priority seat. EDIT: that wasn't meant to be in reply to the above comment. I was going to reply, but I changed my mind. Evidently I didn't click away from the "reply" box *facepalm*

And elephant genetics are relevant to humans how?

I hope that one day the rules change and that they stop handing out handicap permits for people who are obese. They need the exercise.

Maybe instead of disability plaques they should be issued gym memberships?

Not all disabilities are visible, so I wouldn't assume nothing is wrong by looking. You can't see a heart defect for example, and standing could stress that. HOWEVER, obesity is a choice. It is a sad choice with real consequences, but it is a choice. It doesn't warrant giving up your seat.

It's sad that doctors actually hand out handicap placards to these people. There are so many of them they make life harder on people that are actually disabled.

I can't stand people like that. I.e. fat stupid people. BUT I don't think this is an FML. More like a YGFKM. You gotta be ******* kidding me

maybe the FML was that they live in a world where obesity is considered a disability.

Obesity is usually not a choice. Sometimes it is taught and sometimes it's got something to do with how their body functions. It's sad though when people don't have enough respect or pride for themselves to just stand a few minutes on a bus or train.

I disagree. My family is riddled with obesity, cancer, and heart disease. And good food ._. Being obese 9/10 times is simply a matter of lack of will power to stop eating the (amazing) food. If it's a hormone imbalance, I'm sure there's something the doctors can give to help keep the body balanced. And there's no way that it's 'taught'; if the family is obese, then yeah, you're more likely to be obese, (simply because someone's making awesome food) but there comes an age (about puberty) when you really start to learn the consequences of your eating habits, and should curb those.

If you've learned to associate food with fun and happiness then obesity can be taught. For the rest of your life, whenever you have a bad day you'll solve your emotional problems by eating. Yes it has to do with lack of will power but the lack of will power comes from the powerful conditioning they may have received at a young age. Most obese people have a family history of obesity or severe emotional issues which cause them turn to food for happiness.
