Health and wellbeing

Today, I scolded my son at a buffet after he pointed at an obese woman in a motorized wheelchair and asked how anyone could let themselves get so unhealthy. As I lectured him on genetics and thyroid problems, she rolled past with a plate stacked with an obscene amount of fried food. FML

well, most obesity issues are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle

Only thin people can go to an all you can eat buffet and eat fried food. Until they get fat, then they lose the privilege. Heaven help a fat person who eats in public!

Yeah, 96. Except it goes like this: Fat person eating a salad = "Who're you joking? LOL you didn't get that way by eating salads, fatty." Fat person eating a normal meal = everybody suddenly becomes a nutritionist on why it's unhealthy anyway Fat person eating an unhealthy meal = "Oh my GOD, this is why you're FAT. This one meal is what made you FAT. Fat people have no self-discipline, ugh." I've been fat, average, and borderline-underweight, and I wish I could keep my weight low for myself but still appear fat to other people; it's interesting to see how much better people treat you when you lose weight. Way too many people have turned into the guy that bullied them in seventh grade.

Should have told him that some people are idiots.

awe, sorry op. You seem like a good mom though and you're doing your part on teaching that! (: b/c if it were the case of genetics or anything like that then you would've prevented some feelings getting hurt!

I'm not really sure why this is an fml. A woman that you don't know's poor diet choices aren't your concern and in no way affect your life.

Well as someone who has thyroid problems and is a little over weight because of it, I thank you for explaining to your son about them. :) sounds like you're a great mom.

Thyroid problems and genetics are no excuse for being obese. my mother doesn't even have a thyroid because she had thyroid cancer and had to have it removed. she isn't the most fit person but she's not obese, hell she can beat me in an arm wrestle. Even if you have a health problem that makes it harder to stay healthy doesn't mean its an excuse to be unhealthy

Maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions that every obese person you see has a genetic/thyroid problem. Some people are fat because they're lazy + gluttonous.

She must have heard him in that case a lot of comfort food was needed

Her personal choices aren't your problem. You took responsibility for your son, and that's what's important. It's good to see parents teaching their kids not to be rude, good job OP. :)

Well either way he should mind his own business. Especially since you live in a country where she will likely be the one to pay for the extra medical costs incurred by her lifestyle choices.
