Live by the ticket, die by the ticket. Sure hope you weren't counting on any sympathy.
I can't believe you posted it and expected support. This has to be fake. The thing I hate most about cops is that they constantly break the laws that they enforce. I suppose that happens any time you give someone power, but it still really bugs me. You shouldn't ticket someone for going 10 over. It's not dangerous and not excessive. It really made my day seeing that a cop got a ticket for giving the wrong person a ticket. It reminds me that as much as I hate the 5-0, there's always someone that can stick it to them :)
Yeah police are meant to lead by example. YDI for pulling someone over while doin somethin wrong yourself.
Last week I was driving on a cross-country trip trying my best to be a cautious and curteous driver. I made a conscious effort to follow every law of which I was aware. I saw an officer on the side of the road, took off cruise control, and dropped my speed an additional 5mph. I was very careful not to break any laws as I passed the officer. He pulled me over for breaking some obscure law for which there is no equivalent in my own state. I was polite, respectful, and assured him that - now that I was aware of the law - I would be sure to follow it while in his state. You know what? He didn't even hesitate to give me a ticket. You know what else? It comes with a mandatory court appearance for which I have to drive 10 hours. I don't very much like cops at the moment. So if you're going to hand out tickets on technicalities, you'd better be ready to receive them in return. I'd have done the same to that police officer if I'd had the power to do so, and your misfortune brings me a small amount of happiness.
Dude, 10 over is like nothing. I speed all the damn time, but then again I do live out in the middle of bloody nowhere. Also, Intoxicunt, really? We should respect the law or feel it's wrath? I didn't expect that from you. =/
Why not? I'm not one of these "Ohhh **** the pigs, **** government , anarchy wooo!" types... I don't like all the laws either. Boohoo. I hardly think getting myself a ticket or landed in jail is helping my case. What does that prove? That I can break the law? Oh. Wow. I really won in that deal. I never said we should be mindless slaves. At the same time, I have little to no respect for those who retaliate against laws they disagree with by just breaking them anyway. That's childish. What if I decide I think killing should be ok? (In actuality, I do, in a roundabout way). Should I just go do it, regardless of the laws, then complain on FML when I get sentenced to death? Somehow, I don't see that helping the situation.
"I have little to no respect for those who retaliate against laws they disagree with by just breaking them anyway." You have no respect for people who commit civil disobedience? I'm not saying that speeding is necessarily civil disobedience. I agree that it is foolish to be SURPRISED at the consequences of breaking a law that you know about and disagree with. I do not agree that there are not valid reasons to break the law. I also do not agree that people forfeit the right to bitch about a law by breaking it. There are plenty of scenarios where you are safer speeding than driving at exactly the speed limit. Try going the speed limit on the QEW, even in the right lane, and you'll see what I mean.
I'm not one of those types either. But I didn't think you considered civil disobedience to be childish (which is how women got their rights btw), and that you didn't realize that petitioning the government to change a law actually gets you no where. Yea we can work to change laws, but it's gotta be drastic. Also, the reason we have roads that have higher speed limits that 55 mph is due to people breaking the law by speeding. The US at one point set a maximum speed at 55 because of fuel economy. They got rid of it because people disregarded it. They sped, and the government changed the laws.
I agree there are exceptions. That applies to any law, rule, etc. However, in regular circumstances, I don't think it's cool to just disregard the law/traffic rules. I take it this guy had no good excuse, otherwise the FML would read, "He was fleeing for his life, so I reduced his fine..." or something of that nature. What I don't respect are people who are, for lack of a better term, extremist vigilantes. THEY decide what laws are appropriate, and follow those alone, because they can't handle authority. I mean, if someone really just can't handle being expected to follow some guidelines, as I said earlier, they should move to an island and start an anarchist society. I'm not that much of a conformist, but I have gotten to the point in life where I don't see "rebelling" as useful at all. In this specific case, I hardly think the guy should bitch about getting the obvious consequence to be expected for his actions. Sure, he CAN bitch about it, but it's ridiculous. As for people who commit civil disobedience, that is very broad and vague. I don't respect that in general, but there are so very many cases that it is excusable that I can't really say. My basic point is that it wouldn't kill someone to slow down 6.2 (I think that was it) mph. Are they really going to arrive at their destination that much sooner if they speed a little? It screams to me, "I hate authority and am a brat, so I'm going to this just because I can!" Then, "Waaah, I got a ticket." Plus, we still don't know that he wasn't in a zone where the speed limit is 30 or something. By context, I'm assuming he was one of the fastest cars out there. So why can't he drive the speed of the other cars? It doesn't sound to be a case of having to speed to avoid causing wrecks.
So they should continue raising it? People go 90 now, so let's raise it to that. Then, people will go as fast as their car can move, so let's just get rid of speed limits. I mean, hey, the Autobahn works pretty well. If that's what you're for, then ok. I just disagree with that. I don't necessarily believe that women would never have gotten their rights any other way. African slaves didn't get equal rights by forcing it. Sure, they rebelled and ran away, but they were hunted down when they did. What really turned the tide was, you guessed it, government. I've seen petitions do a decent job, actually. I don't think cops are assholes for upholding the law. They don't get to pick and choose what parts they like, then uphold those. I do think the majority of speeders are assholes, though. I don't think it's a protest against the speed limit to be compared to women's rights. I think it's (usually) people who are in a hurry, got a chip on their shoulder, want to show off, or something of that nature. THAT is what I don't respect. Edit: I believe I have effectively written a novel. :/
You should do a little research on the autobahns. Most are not unlimited speed, anything goes. The speed limits make sense, because they are adjusted based on traffic volume, weather, etc. The police primarily identify and punish the truly dangerous behaviors (impeding traffic) instead of just the easiest ones to collect fines for. As far as your version of how African slaves got their rights in this country, that's a bit of an oversimplification. In the interest of not writing an essay I'll leave it at that. This FML isn't about a guy bitching about getting a speeding ticket. It's a guy who is strict about enforcing the law bitching because another enforcer did the same to him. "My basic point is that it wouldn't kill someone to slow down 6.2 (I think that was it) mph" This line of reasoning has led to a lot of human suffering. It's pretty similar to: "would it kill someone to obey the school dress code?" and "would it kill someone to use the colored bathroom?" Irrational laws piss people off, even when they are mere inconveniences.
The comment didn't go through. ****. Point being: You're not changing my OPINIONS, nor am I changing yours. I'm every bit as entitled to mine. And you people really get on my nerves. So anything left to be said can be said in a PM. I'm through with this thread.
I'm not a big fan of many laws in my country, but speed limits (At least where I'm from) are based on the chances people have of surviving should they get hit at certain speeds, and the time it takes a car to fully stop. As well as the structural integrity of cars hit at certain speeds, speeding is reckless and down right retarded wherever, for whatever reason (Unless you're in the emergency services). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvja-PA5Egc&feature=PlayList&p=EAA9BB09632F6C9D&index=31 There you go.
Sucks for you OP but it was pretty funny to read! What are the odds huh? Also just want to say "Thank You" for choosing to protect your fellow people as a career :) You guys never get the credit you deserve. To everyone slamming him and calling him derogatory names - grow up. These people risk there lives everyday to keep you safe even though they know people like you will never appreciate it. There is often very little thanks given to those in the field of emergency services yet they hold one of the most important jobs. Yes 10 over may not be that much, but it's still 10 over... it's still breaking a law. If they let this go what will be next?!?! "You give an inch, they take a mile"
**** the police

Yeah, God forbid he actually did his job. It's scum like you who think it's okay to break the law if it's "only a little."
Yeah I know. Totally. F*ck him for pulling someone over that was going over the speed limit. I hate when cops pull people over for breaking the law. What a c*ckhole of a policeman.
