I like what you've done with the place

Today, a week after spending most of my paycheck on a down-payment and rent on a new apartment, I found out the "landlord" I paid was a scammer. Turns out the real owner was away on vacation, and he'd stolen most of her stuff before showing me the place. FML

It was really that guy's lucky day. Unfortunate for both of you, though. Hopefully you had enough details to get them caught and your money back.

Yes, pretty common scam these days. Happened to a nephew who was renting a place with friends for the summer. Tracked down the scammer, but never got the money back. They really try to take advantage of young, inexperienced people.

We'll surely you got a good look at his face.

How hard is it to confirm that he's the landlord? I teach a life-skills class on how to avoid this exact scam. Insist on a management company's number, or (if it's a house) check with the city to verify the owner.

That's why you don't use Craigslist.

Always risky to pay substantial amounts to unknown people in cash. If you payed another way (cheque, I guess, although maybe scammers take cards these days) then it should be tracable.

Did you do no checking about who you were renting from? ydi
