Today, I held a presentation about my masters thesis. Turns out, my professor never ever actually read the drafts I'd given him, but decided to rip me to pieces in front of everyone, saying that the topic isn't worth researching. I've been working on it for six months. FML

That does not seem very considerate or professional of your professor, file a formal complaint ! >:O

You should have replied back with "Well it would have helped if you had been doing your job, why didn't you say something back when I showed you the drafts?" you need to stand up for yourself OP, because no one else will.

you lot saying 'college is hard, ydi for not realising' seem to not know how a masters degree works at all. You are allowed to, and suppose to discuss your thesis title with your professor before you start major research on it, and you're suppose to discuss it with them as you go if ever you get stuck... as far as i'm aware.. I don't know if it's a YDI for not arranging to speak with your professor before hand, or FYL for your teacher not arranging time to speak with you 6 months ago..

The same thing happened to me as well, although it was for a bachelor's degree. I saw my professor regularly and she always told me I was doing a good job. Right before I had to hand the dissertation in I asked her what things I should still work on and she said "nothing, it's perfect". Then she returned the copies she had had, and she only had comments on the first few pages, and had not commented anything on the rest of the work (meaning that she hadn't even read it). Then she gave me the worst possible grade. I was so angry for a long time.

#57 : Some profs are willing to work with their students regularly, while others are too busy and tied up to spend enough time with the students. You were one of those lucky ones whose prof can and is willing to spend time with you weekly. I often don't find time for weeks to speak to my prof.

Mmm...I'm going from active duty as a pfc to reservist for school this spring. To be a cadet and go officer....ur comments have opened my eyes! Time to treat school like iraq and stop out all who don't stand quietly....mmmm this seems to be going over bord....or not lol

you should've asked you're professor (during the 6months) if he read it AND if u could get feed back.

That's awful! I'm in the process of writing my Master's thesis and we have to present/defend as well. If that happened to me I don't know what I'd do. I'd be furious and mortified at the same time! Not your fault OP. I hope it works out for you.

I agree with #1 partly. To everyone bashing him/her, think about this; you don't have to jump off a cliff to know that it's gonna suck when you hit the bottom. I don't think that you deserved it though, because your professor seems to be afflicted with a disease called 'I-don't-care-so-go-screw-yourselfitis'.

I see OP is from Germany, where critiquing something can be done in the most confrontational way imaginable. It's just the way things are done. Defending the thesis with considered arguments would definitely be required under these circumstances.

that sucks OP. can't believe your mentor dissed your topic. made him look lame since he is supposed to approve it in the first place. AND lots of finished works are lame; then become more so during re write for publication.
