Personally, my response to that would have been "Well, in that case, yes. I'm busy that night. I just made plans for my night off." ;)
See, he can only ASK you to take his shift. You can TELL him to go **** himself.
This is why you should respond to "Are you busy next Friday?" with "Why do you ask?" Well, at least you'll be earning a little extra money. Or you can lie the next day and say something came up so, no, you can't take his shift.
"I thought you'd never ask!" "Good, because I need you to take my shift." "...Boy, do I wish I was right."
