Nitpicking

By Unteachable - 08/02/2017 06:00 - United States

Today, as a high school English teacher, I had to read submissions for a writing contest. The entries were filled with words like "irregardless", "could of", "acrost", and "ain't". These papers were supposedly written by the best students in the school. FML

Same thing different taste

Underfunded and underappreciated

Today, I got back the essay I wrote about how my country's education system is fucked. At one point, I made a spelling mistake. My teacher wrote a note about it, basically calling me illiterate, and telling me to pay attention in school instead of whining about it. She misspelled "school". FML

America has had a terrible education system for decades. It's not a new thing. If anything, it was improved under Obama.

I had one that demanded you write (sic) behind every quote. You only use (sic) after a quote or word if they used improper grammar and it's letting the reader know that improper phrase is exactly what the person said.

Irregardless is actually in the dictionary (though it's not a real word)

It's beyond depressing. Our public education system has been broken for decades. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" really screwed things up--and made it so teachers couldn't devote time to anything beyond language arts and math. They are completely constrained by the standardized tests that their students have to take each year. Funding is based on test scores--so teachers have to teach to the test. No time or money for science or history. The switch to common core just made everything more confusing. Kids are graduating from high school without being able to write basic grammatical sentences--with subjects and verbs that match them. Spelling? Fughedaboudit! And now we have DeVos. FEL! (**** everyone's lives!) Of course, like DeVos, we can all send our kids to private schools, which in my neck of the woods (NYC), costs $42,000 a year (and no, that's not a typo). Easy peasey, right? And for the record, "ain't" is never acceptable in writing or speech.

Could of, should of, would of all bother me for some reason. My ex who always acted like he was smarter than me but would continue to use the 3 regardless of how many times I corrected him.

Uhhh, the commas and period go on the inside of the quotation marks. People in glass houses...

You're the English teacher, I lay the blame at your feet.

Everyone complains it was Obama..obviously he wasn't the greatest president. However, he obviously did something right or he wouldn't have been elected twice in a row. Not to mention he got left with Bush's shit. Stop being salty conservatives and get over it; a black guy won over a rich old guy twice in a row.

Creative writing is filled with vernacular. It's not a formal paper. Breathe. And they're teenagers. This is your chance to interject and help them.

Irregardless is a word according to merriam-webster.com. One less issue to worry about.

Now we get the DeVos education system! ?
