op, change banks! find one with overdraft protection that will pay out for a $5 cup of coffee and charge you an additional $35 per swipe. that way you can buy a cup next time and while you set and drink it you can whine about how broke you are going to be when you deposit your next check. FYL
You call that overdraft protection? I'd rather use a bank that denies the transaction instead of charging me exorbitant fees for making a mistake. The one time I came close to going into overdraft was when the account I don't keep a balance in (used mainly for paying collective bills for my roommates and I) was automatically charged to renew my Xbox Live account. Thankfully they denied it without charging me some ridiculous fee.
Here's a real FML dealing with Starbucks. A kid walks into a Starbucks and steals the tip jar, probably because his account had insufficient funds. He runs out and a regular customer chases after him. The kid who stole the tip jar runs over the guy with his car, causing fatal brain and head injuries. Was killing another person and the jail time really worth the $5 that was in the tip jar? www dot ksdk dot com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=169054
YDI for drinking that garbage and for trying to spend money you don't even have, and on something frivolous at that. People like you need to shred the credit cards and stick to cash.
How does it happen that you miss the fact that you don't have enough credit available to pay for coffee? Seriously, I'm a bit of a space case and don't keep a close enough eye on my finances most of the time...but I can't imagine having *no* money available and not realising it.
1. you should always try to tip the people that serve you every time, not just because you're being nice. 2. you might have "insufficient funds" because you probably spend $5 everyday on coffee at starbucks. 3. yes, the world does hate you. it is specifically targeting YOU. watch out.

Some things happen that are beyond control (e.g. natural disasters...) but not knowing that you don't even have 5 bucks in your account before you try to use your card is well within your control. It has nothing to do with chance or the world "hating you". It has everything to do with your laziness and lack of initiative to keep track of your personal finances. Your card being declined is probably the best thing that could have happened to you. If you don't even have enough money for a cup of Starbucks coffee, then Starbucks is the last place you should be trying to buy coffee.
Awh that sucks. :(
