It was probably one of those outdoor tables that's meant to let liquid fall through, rather than a solid table. Sometimes when people pull their chair closer to the table they lean forward to do so, or perhaps she leaned forward to greet her date or take a sip from her coffee or something. The real problem is that she must have panicked when her necklace got caught. If she had been calm she could have taken the necklace off and figured out how to get it uncaught without breaking it or spilling coffee.

Unless you were at a lower level than the table or the pendant was on a long ass necklace there is no way you could have caught it on the table just by walking past it. Unless you walk with as hunch or something in which case you have worse problems than just this.
