Sorry…

Today, I was working at Old Navy. A girl came up to me and did a bizarre dance. Not knowing how to react, I imitated her to be friendly with the customer. Then she stopped cold. Her friend stormed up to me and yelled, "You jerk! Why are you making fun of her? She has Tourette's, you know!" FML

"She has tourettes you know" ???? no apparantly u dont know her life story lol

Don't worry. I have Tourette's as well and the girl who had it hates her friend more than she does you. I hate being singled out for it. It's just minor I have a neck and nose twitch and a humming one. Not everyone with Tourette's. Personaly I deal with having tourette's the same way I deal with everything. Humor. The people with Tourette's that are sensitive about it are what makes it bad. I would of just made up something because people(except the ones who think it doesnt exist) ALWAYS feel bad when you tell them "Oh I have Tourettes" so I hate saying I have it.

I'm questioning whether the girl in this story even actually had Tourette's. She "stopped cold" as soon as you started imitating her. From my understanding, these behaviors arise from problems with impulse control. I would think (and I could be wrong here) that anger would unbalance that even more. I don't think someone who actually had Tourette's would have immediately stopped; rather, their tick would have finished running its course. Even if she did have it, if it's weak enough to be stopped that easily, you'd think she would be able to control it in public better. I hope I don't offend anyone here. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no expert on the subject. Just sharing my thoughts.

Yes, so it would seem. But with tics and tourettes, you don't exactly know what you're doing. It's just second nature but if you realize what you're doing, you stop doing it, even if you're angry. I've had a tic for my entire life... that's my experience.

That's stupid. You had no way to know she had tourette's... 111- Because having a little fun at work is soooo wrong. :|

103 - Thanks for the insight, but making people feel bad like that makes you a jerk. Give people the benefit of the doubt and don't try to make them feel bad. Just tell them politely.

OH sh- I would have done the same thing you would have. As long as people give you a chance then explain your actions. If they're gonna be bitchy and try and stop you from talking, then just call a supervisor and explain to them what happened before they do, or you're screwed, lolz.

aw ): I'm pretty sure that you didn't know and it was a simple mistake
