Today, my husband and I went to my overbearing mom's 57th birthday party. He opened his gift in front of her and said smugly, "The makeup's for your face, and the prayer book's for the fat rolls." Any hope of family peace is now lost. FML

Today, I got together a surprise party for my mom's birthday. I invited all her friends and her douchebag boyfriend who I don't get along with. When my mom got home, he took credit and got her friends to back him up with bribing. My mom said I'm selfish and horrible for not trying for her. FML

Today, my brother and I ruined our mother's birthday by fighting. She's 76, we're 55 and 54 and yet still unable to comport ourselves like adults. She yelled at us and then "showed me" by eating the dish he made but not mine. I reverted to teenage coping tactics, dissociating like a boss, and hiding in my room. Worst family visit ever. FML

1.) Wife & husband attend birthday party for her mother. 2.) Her mother is technically a 'mother-in-law' to her husband. 3.) Husband personally unwraps - and gives a short, cruel explanation for - the gifts he bought his mother-in-law upon presenting them to her. 4.) It is worded poorly. You folks that understand it, that's great. But when so many posts are saying the same thing, it means that more than one or two people didn't understand it. I myself was grateful to #78 for the clarification. All that aside, the guy is very disrespectful and OP has some decisions to make.

Just because their his "in laws" doesn't mean he has to ever see them. I've seen my wife's mom once and her dad never since we got married. You marry your spouse, not their family. Sometimes family peace comes from not having to see each other.

I don't like how this is worded...instead of saying "in front of his mother-in-law" I would have just said "in front of my mother" or something... but anyway, what he said was still kind of rude, even if she is overbearing
