at my ralphs, the closers work 8 hour shifts unless asked to come in later, or if they split their shift with someone.
Seriously, you had to work how much overtime? 5-10 minutes? Big deal. If you start counting minutes; of those 8 hours you work a day, how much minutes do just hang around?
that's nonsense. in customer service, being available counts as working. plus, I should point out that some places don't pay overtime AT ALL. if you stay more, even if it's 8 hours, you won't get paid for it.
she's old, and she paid in pennies. that could be interpreted as nearly 1500 pennies. that would take an old person about 30 mins. plus working any amount of time overtime when you're a cashier is horrible. because you spend all day dealing with the rudest people with no manners who you just want to punch in the face. once it's time to go home. it is so enjoyable
**** that puta!!!!!
so.....oh that's all. Like no one else hates their job. Cry me a river.
Why weren't you forthright and say you were closed? Being polite, firm and honest would have saved you your time and sanity. If the supervisor/employer questions, tell them that you would happily work overtime if paid, but are unfortunately limited to the hours you are paid, if not.
Just think of it as if you said, "If I had a penny for every time I spelled 'paid' wrong..." You made two cents just in one, little FML.
True, unless the old lady was paying out a long line of pennies attached to a rope or something.
Ah, there's the comment I was looking for.
thats why i hâte old ppl.. they think everythink is owed to them
I worked at Ralphs for 3 years and they have to give you overtime if you work over 8 hours. Not sure if that's a state or union law, but either way, if you were over 8 hours you are legally entitled to overtime for however long you work after 8 hours :)

I know 5 or 10 minutes here and there doesn't sound like much, but it adds up. Up until recently, people at my work didn't get paid to close up, which takes around 15 minutes if all goes well. Over 5 days, that's 1.25 hours - around $25. If you work 50 weeks a year, that's $1250 you're getting screwed out of. People need to learn to stop undervaluing their time. If you're working, you should be paid. It's that simple.
I've been there and it sucks.
