Today, a colleague gave me an expensive box of chocolates for my birthday. I was surprised she spent so much on me, but didn't think much of it. Only when I got back home and excitedly opened the box did I realise the chocolates had expired months ago. FML
I agree, your life sucks 30 345
You deserved it 2 532

Migole tells us more.

Those were still fine luckily but in general it can expire, yes. It becomes all grey and greasy and tastes like soap. Not nice :/

If they only expired months ago, and not years, they're probably still fine. Unless there are fresh ingredients like fruit, which is unlikely in boxed chocolate anyway, chocolate doesn't really expire that easily. If the chocolates have this strange white-ish coating to them (which is really the only way you'd know visibly that something was not right, since chocolates don't really get mold unless they're kept incorrectly and exposed to some pretty hefty moisture) then they are fine. The white-ish coating simply means they've been kept too close to a heat source, and is simply the cocoa butter rising to the top. Chocolate can get stale, though, but it takes a good while.

It was still fine, actually ;) It was more of a wtf moment because it had marks on the packaging like someone had used it as a writing pad. So we just sat there and thought "wow, you re-gifted something that has probably been lying around your house for ages, you used it as a table and didn't even check the expiration date?". She's definitely getting the link to this though ^^ P.S. I'm the OP but somehow it was published as anonymous although I was logged in ...

Life is like a box of chocolates... you never know when someone is going to give you one they found in the attic.

Chocolate expires? They have a best by date but I doubt that they have gone bad...

I say you make something for her/him with them (chocolate cake, Brownies?) then gift it to them.

Just don't forget the laxatives ;P

This is why you accept only dark chocolate.

Expired chocolates aren't actually gone bad. I had some chocolates that were over a year expired and they were still perfect. As long as they haven't sat somewhere really hot. Just eat the chocolates and don't be so snotty.

Time for a regift to your colleague. Be sure to give it to them in public so they don't make a scene.
