I'd send that shit back with a piece missing. "Here you go. Sorry I ate a piece, but you did put it on the 'help yourself' counter."
That's definitely on your coworker for putting the cake there
you might want to ask first if she has diabetes or any other conditions related to food.
If it was on the Free Food table at my workplace, just one slice would be left by the time I got to it.
"Free food table" that says it all. In our job we also have free food table and free cosmetics/trinkets box, everything there is fair game. Thats the reason why they are there. If its not for everybody, put a note on the box at least. Victim shaming, yes, I know....
I guess the cake was a lie. Or at least the part about it being free.
Why not just rebake that piece unless you ate the entire cake?
It's very kind of you and all but I don't think you weren't obligated to. Her carelessness isn't your problem really. You must be a good person though because I probably wouldn't have baked it back lol of all places for her to leave the cake at work, the free stuff. Entirely her fault. If anything you're doing her favour by saving her butt at this point lol
Personally, I think that's her fault since she left it on the free food table. smdh some people

Had anyone else eaten a slice yet? While it was in the "free food" section, I'm always hesitant to take the first piece of something, unless the person who brought it is directly offering. If other people had eaten it first, it's not solely your fault, and you'd be under no obligation to replace it (though that is kind of you). Truly, putting it there in the first place was her fault, so you're still under no obligation.
I would assume the cake had no writing on it. Just imagine eating cake alone that says happy birthday Grandma!
