A* for effort and intention.
Everyone's acting like the customer did some horrible Injustice but really it's not that big a deal. Deaf people are just like other people. They don't necessarily jump up and down for joy every time someone reaches out to them. It wasn't even that rude. If people are really butthurt about it well welcome to planet earth. There are worse things than a deaf guy rolling his eyes at you.

Wow he's kind of a jerk. I mean I understand he's use to doing things a certain way but he should have been happy at your attempt to connect. I'm sure he doesn't get that much.
It's actually considered to be rude in parts of deaf culture for a hearing person to introduce themselves before the deaf person initiates it. Don't be offended though, a lot of hearing people wouldn't know that.
Why is that? I may be getting the wrong impression, but from the way you've explained it that seems like a really snobbish "How dare you try to speak to me without my permission?!" kind of thing. Is that really what it's supposed to be? I'm genuinely curious- I've never encountered that before.
Yea actually that is how it is sometimes. If a hearing person runs up to a deaf person and is like "I know sign!!" And they only know their alphabet, it's pretty offensive to deaf people. I'm an interpreter and I can say that a lot of deaf people don't want or need help unless they ask for it. In this case, signing their name was stupid and unnecessary.
It's not necessarily rude. In this situation it was not right for the deaf guy to snort and roll his eyes and mock OP.
You put that name tag on every day, and still felt the need to introduce yourself? YDI. Maybe next time you'll skip directly to the much more useful "Can I help you with anything today?" portion of the conversation.
Lol that's funny!
