The issue which led to this was probably pre-existing. The injury just manifested itself doing a mundane task. Your form may be off during your workout, or you may not be properly stretching, or you may not be working your minor supporting muscle groups. Ask a trainer or therapist to look at you and make recommendations. How you heal up fast.

It's most often the small things that mess you up. I once pinched a nerve stretching my muscles so i wouldn't pull anything. Life loves irony, OP.
I'm going to assume you did strength training or cardio... I hope you made sure you stretched enough.
