Today, at my job of 2 months, I'd taken it upon myself to water the plants around the office every day since they all looked a little sad. My boss then asked why so many of the fake plants were getting mouldy. My co-workers had watched me water plastic plants for 2 months and nobody bothered to tell me. FML

I wonder which one of your coworkers won that bet. "Hey, how long d'you think the new girl will keep watering those plants till she realizes they're fake?" "$50 it takes her two weeks." :two months later: "Hasn't she noticed that horrible smell? ... Should we tell her?" *all coworkers are blown away by OPs obliviousness*

I watered a cactus for 9 years before my boss told me that it was fake.

Always poke the dirt before you water. It should be dry to the touch 1/4-1/2" down into the soil. Since fake plants don't absorb moisture, you would probably have figured out pretty quickly that they were fake if you did that.

No doubt they were betting on how long until you found out! Understandable though. And I can relate; I bought a plant, not realizing it was fake, and watered it for a few months, until my housemate pointed out that the plant hadn't changed at all since we got it.. Then I pulled off a leaf, it was plastic.
