Today, I proposed to my girlfriend. She said she wanted to accept, but that she'd basically have to get her mom's permission first. Apparently the answer was no. The worst thing is that she really is this unhealthily dependent on her mom, and probably wasn't lying about needing her permission. FML

OP: I'm sorry that you had to go through with that. I have been in that situation twice. In both cases, I asked for her parents' BLESSING. I always framed it as "I'm going to ask her to marry me, but I'd like your blessing first." I smacks of the old fashioned respect that asking permission shows, but it's saying that I'm doing it with or without your permission. I say ask her anyway, but be ready for her to say no, as he may just respect her father's wishes. Good luck.

if she respects her fathers wishes enough to not marry a person then she doesn't truly love them. Her parents have had their life and made their choices even if some were bad, kids need the oppurtunity to do the same thing.
