Well up to a certain age, I call bullshit on "privacy". You don't(and shouldn't) have much, if any, privacy at a very young age, up to around 13 I'd say. Parents will do what they must to guide you until you gain more privacy over time when it would make sense. That said, the newer generation of parents are seemingly getting more and more stupid, and might think just because they are older and are your parents, it means they know and understand better. Sometimes true, sometimes not.
Once I read "I checked my sister's diary", I immediately hit YDI. I couldn't have cared less why you did it or what you discovered in there. A diary is private, and nothing less than a police search warrant justifies reading it. Also, two wrongs don't make a right.
I agree completely! I have a diary of my own and as soon as I saw this FML I hit ydi. A diary is where you put things not to be read by others until you are at the very least dead.
Bull, shut up
You can pick your friends, your "diary", your clothes--but you can't pick your family or your genes.
No I believe it is, you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose.
What the hell is it with people on this website and reading other people's diaries?
that's what u get for snooping ... then again ur parents are hypocrites riding on the high horse of do as I say not as I do . too bad u got caught
Even though its a but too late for me to add my thoughts, I would have first told Mother Dearest about your worry for your sister. Then, I would have gotten her permission to check the diary for any evidence of why she might act the way she does. Also, W would have been much more careful as not to get caught.
I don't think OP could have asked his sister what was wrong because the FML states she was having withdrawn and angry behavior, and sisters younger or older are always harder to deal with.

Diaries are meant to be private. I'd agree with your mom. Regardless of what she did, you shouldn't have done that.
Me and my sister look out for each other. I have bipolar. When I'm suicidal, talking to me won't get anyone answers. Well wouldn't have when I was younger, pre treatment. If she did that to me, I would have been angry at the time but thankful later, knowing she cared enough. Siblings often know more about each other then the parents do. Sometimes you have to go with your gut. And while snooping seems low, sometimes, depending on the person it really is the only way to know if something is truly wrong and if the parents should be brought into it. This world is not black and white only. There are gray areas that turn a never into an understandable action.
