If he/she "can't afford food" then he/she has no business being in a restaurant! I am sure that if OP had even $3-$4 something could be purchased from the dollar menu at McD's or the grocery store to suffice for a meal. If not, there is always the food bank or soup kitchen! Dining and dashing is THEFT and yes, many restaurants make the waitress pay for it. Dine and Dashers are the scum of the Earth stealing from waitresses who do not even make minimum wage! A$$hole...

Thing is, we haven't heard anything about him being too poor to afford food. All we know is that he went to a restaurant and wasn't going to pay them, and it's a bad idea to just make up some mitigating circumstance that you treat as a fact.

The OP had a chance to share exonerating circumstances. They didn't. There's as much reason to assume they had an actual need to do this as there is reason to assume they're a jerk. So don't get on your high horse about people making an assumption equally qualified with yours. Just as it could be more complicated than it seems, it can also be exactly as simple as it seems. I don't see the OP coming forward to clarify or offer any additional context.
