You don't leave a dog by itself when you just got it, you spend time with the dog. He was probably scared and alone. That's a lot of money for a dog you could've gotten at an animal shelter.
Probably an unpopular opinion but if the dog isn't allowed to live in the house, you shouldn't get a dog. Of course, I'm assuming OP doesn't let dogs in the house and makes them live outside.
