You should probably engrave a necklace after you've been in the relationship.
I agree with everyone saying "too much too soon." Giving a girl a gold necklace on the first date sends a message that you REALLY don't want to be sending. Romantic gestures can be cute, but something that serious is creepy for the very first date. :/ Perhaps you're lucky that she got sick and had to go home before you could give the necklace to her, because I guarantee that her reaction would not have been favorable...
