Today, I finally handed my girlfriend a portrait of her. I'm not the best drawer, but I spent weeks on it and I thought it turned out pretty good. When she looked at it, she asked what kind of dog was it. FML

Unless you are an incredibly skilled artist ("drawer?" Please!), never attempt to draw your girlfriend. She'll think you are mocking her or pointing out her flaws.

Right. And never bake someone a birthday cake unless you're an accomplished pastry chef, and never make them a trinket/jewellery box/etc unless you're a professional carpenter. It's the thought behind a gift, not how good you are at doing something.

You can get jewelry kits from the store and make a pretty bracelet. Unless you are trying to make a 3 tiered cake with jeweled frosting and tiny angels on it, it does not take a lot of skill to put some cookies in the oven and call it a gift. However, some people are very critical and embarrassed by badly done artwork of themselves. Unless Op is 12 and under, leave the art to people with real talent.

If you mess up a cake, it wont insult someone, it does not require a lot of skill to make a cute little bracelet, and I doubt that you are carving a very beautiful portmanteau (jewelry box) it is not that hard to slap something together, however as a non professional artist who has worked for years and years to perfect sketching peoples faces and bodies, I never showed anyone anything until the sketch could be mistaken for a black and white photo, my best guess is OP was sketching "anime" and OPs girlfriend is not into that stuff. Long story short, he is not an artist, and even though his heart was in the right place, he should have practiced as showing someone a sketch of their likeness can be very insulting to them if done poorly with no vocational training or dedicated practice.
