YDI for not paying for expedited passport service. You can get a passport in a matter of a few days if you go to a US passport office and show proof of imminent travel and pay an extra fee.

If you set up an appointment and prove you're leaving within 7 days, you can get your passport in one day. I did it. YDI for not preparing. Can't imagine what horrible mistakes you would have made in Italy.

I don't know about in the US but on UK passport forms they do tell you not to book any travel before you get the passport.

I completely relate. I was supposed to go on a school trip to Barcelona on March but I couldn't because I didn't have a valid passport. I tried to get a passport last year and expected it on December but the passport was being a bitch about it. The day after they left for Barcelona, my passport arrived in the mail... I fully paid and the insurance office is being lazy about our money back, we sent an insurance firm by registered mail so they definitely had received it...
