Today, I finally went to the doctor for a condition I've had all my life. Turns out it was easily cured with a simple pill. I peed in my pants everyday for 27 years for nothing. FML

I'm unsure why it took you 27 years to do this. I understand it can be embarrassing but in my mind it's even more embarrassing to have this happen to you during the day.

Why would you, or your parents not visit a doctor?

I put YDI for waiting that long. Obviously that wasn't common and it's best to find out than be afraid of the diagnosis. Or too lazy, I suppose.

I had something similar from the age of 9 to 13, at the younger age doctors said it was normal, I had to insist they check me again as I got older. Turns out I needed surgery and I'm now 29 and haven't wet the bed in nearly 20 years. Don't be neglectful of your health people, no matter how embarrassing it is.

First 18 years while in parent's care - FYL, from 18 to 27 YDI. OMG 9 years waiting? Or you secretly enjoyed it? Ewww

Besides, there is no point being embarrassed about a medical condition, doctors have seen it all, that's their job.

You could have asked google about it.

I think many people here have not fully considered the context. Most children want and need to believe their parent are good, trustworthy people who love them. In most cases like OP's the. Hold would likely have worn diapers for years beyond the age of his peers which likely isolated him Even wearing an external catheter attached to a urine collection pouch strapped to your leg can be both physically and emotionally limiting. As a child it seems he was likely told to just accept it and deal with it. There are several religious faiths that do not permit medical intervention, not even a consultation with a doctor. It does not matter whether his worldview was limited by a religious perspective or just the habits and personal beliefs of his parents and family. Certainly I think you can deduct the first 18 of 27 years. Even after having moved away from home at 18 I can very easily see why he might not have thought to consider seeking a medical opinion. And even once it occurred to him to research his problem on Google the ability, as many have already stated, there are lots of very good, valid reasons he may not have been able to access the correct medical care. I apologize for using the male pronouns throughout my reply. I don't recall any indication of gender in the original post but this could apply to any gender. I was to say that while I'm sure when you looked back, a lot of your past sucked, but please don't blame yourself. And please don't let anyone here convince you that you deserve any blame. Best of luck.

Was this the first time you sought treatment for this? If I were pissing myself everyday I would have seen a whole panel of specialists by now...that's not something you should have to live with. If you have gone to the doctor before and they missed the simple solution then that is a true FML.

It's ok OP. I needed a pull-up at night until about 6th or 7th grade because my bladder couldn't control itself while I was sleeping.

I cannot help but relate you to the patients we see in the ER who have had a medical problem for days, weeks, months, or even years, who have been holding back on getting treatment all this time, only to come in and demand to be cured immediately.. BUT as a medical staff, I have to THANK YOU for going to your doctor to get treated, rather than showing up at the nearest ER for a condition that should have been treated a long time ago.
