At least you found out before your trip. Now you can get a true Indian experience with alternative Indian solutions. Or, you know, all the other American solutions still available.

I am too! I have to use a lavender oil spray. It works better than any bug spray and it smells good :)

Go to Bath and Body Works and buy their Japanese Cherry Blossom lotion and body spray. It repels almost all insects. Trust me, I used it to repel ticks, fire ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and everything else when I was in the carolinas

You might be allergic to DEET, the stuff that makes mosquitos go away, which is a pretty common allergy. You can find some DEET free mosquito repellent on Amazon
