Why not just open your door but remain in the vehicle? Seems like the obvious solution.
For everyone who's saying tint is pointless: A) Wait until you can actually drive before you say that B) Come out to the west coast where it is sunny 320 days out of the year and try going without tint or sunglasses.
Yeah I seriously don't get it - what is oh so dangerous about opening the door? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm 15 so I haven't started driving yet - but I don't see anything worthy of this kind of reaction from the cop. You can shoot someone through an open window too. Actually it would probably be easier to roll down a tinted window, fire a shot at the guy right outside your window, and drive off than it would be to open the door, get out, aim, and shoot, wouldn't it? So confused...
You deserved it. Never open the door or do anything besides roll down your window unless the cop asks you to, they have to perceive it as a threat. The cussing might have been unnecessary... but who knows, maybe it was a bad day for the guy... xDDD
@94, that's false. in my state (MD) the legal limit is 35%, a lot of states that have this same limit. some states are as high as 50% and in a couple you're not even allowed to tint the front windows
My best friend is in law enforcement and he told me dozens of stories when he was going through training of officers who pulled people over. It's not super rare for someone to open their door and shoot at the police before trying to speed away. A few months ago another officer that worked 20 miles from my friend was shot in the face by someone who had been pulled over. IIRC the door wasn't even opened then, the guy just shot right out the rolled down window. These things happen so fast sometimes. The policeman was 100% right to draw his gun and get you down on the ground. You should have had your hands up and tried to yell through the glass that you couldn't roll it down. Cars aren't soundproof, he'd have heard you.
OP, that sucks, man. I'd have probably opened the door and stuck my hands out in that case, not actually gotten out of the car. Still, that must have been scary. Oh, the ignorance... 1) All of the window tint professionals I've ever been to suggest you wait three days before rolling down your windows. Obviously, it's not like you can never roll your windows down again if you get your windows tinted, but there's a good chance you'll cause scratches/bubbles/wrinkles if you do it within the first few days. You have to let it dry, people. 2) Window tint is extremely useful. It provides protection from UV rays, heat reduction, and privacy. All three of those are useful for me. The first two are useful for anyone who lives in a place that gets warm in the summer. Even if you live in a place that sees the light of day, you have to at least appreciate the UV protection if you want the interior in your car to last more than a few years. 3) New Mexico is not the only state that allows window tint that dark. In Texas, you will pass the state inspection if your front windows read 20%. The same is true in a few other states with warm climates.
