WHY DO MOMS DO THIS SHIT?! It's almost as bad as OP's girlfriend selling off all his N64 and Atari consoles and games to buy him a PS4. Almost.
And this is why we do regular backups so we never lose any data ...
HAPPY... birthday? =
Well... you kind of deserve it for not telling anyone about everything that was on it. Hindsight I suppose...
So OP was supposed to assume that her mom would sell the laptop without her permission? If someone has had a laptop for six years (or for any amount of time come to think of it), you shouldn't need to be told that there could be important stuff on there.
So if I stole your furniture and sold it, it would be your fault for not telling everyone that it was important to you?
****. See if you can track it down.
Don't forget about the ****
Thank goodness my mum never sells my stuff. If, for instance, I get a new iPad, I usually I just pass it down to my mum. When I got my new smart 50" sexy beast of a TV... I just moved my old flatscreen into the guest room. We don't usually sell stuff to buy new stuff. Except that one time I sold my old iPod touch 4 to get a PS4 game.
I know that feel OP... My mom gave away my DS along with the games I played the most behind my back. Sorry about your laptop.
This is why I have trust issues with surprises.
This is why you should regularly back up your documents, music, pictures, etc...it's really not that complicated people. You could have saved it all...

Yikes. Ask for it back so you can get all the old data from it! I'm sure any reasonable person would oblige
She probably had sold it to buy you this one.
