While internet and social networks aren't the best way to meet new people, on the internet and social networks you get access to more people than you can possibly meet in real life. So if you have social network profile, it makes sense to use it to ask somebody out or get acquainted with somebody.

maybe its just me but shouldnt you actually be IN a relationship prior to setting that as your status? I would be creeped out if someone sent me that request and we werent dating...
