Today, I got accepted to the North America Scholar Consortium as a Member of the Highest Honor, which I had applied for a few weeks ago. Happy to be able to add something good to my resume, I called my mom excitedly, and then Googled it to ascertain the level of prestige. Turns out it's a scam. FML

OK, I'm the OP, let me explain why I fell for it: -I had very recently received invitations to join two legit honor societies (one I was just inducted to tonight at a formal ceremony at my school, the other has regular meetings and community service projects) -Believe it or not, I do actually have a 4.0 GPA as a junior and miscellaneous other qualifications, so being "accepted" to this honor society didn't seem to be a stretch or anything -As I'm ridiculously busy right now, I didn't Google it first or even look too deeply at their website, I just quickly completed the "application" (you go on their website, apply, and then wait to hear from them) which was free Once I actually got the "acceptance" I called my mom and told her about it. I got off the phone with her and Googled it to get more info about it (I'd never heard of it) and discovered it was a scam. I'm glad I did so because their "initiation fee" was 68 bucks, and I hadn't given them credit card info or anything yet. Obviously I felt stupid; I called my mom back a second later and told her. I'm just glad I didn't COMPLETELY fall for it... lol. I should have taken more time at the start, but #22 is right; I'm just lucky I didn't lose 68. I lost 10 minutes of time and a chunk of my pride. :P I was also pretty pissed/disappointed, but it's OK; I'm in two ACTUAL honor societies, so whatever... I don't need a fake one. ;)

why didnt you google it BEFORE you applied?

It doesn't even sound real. YDI for not researching what you were applying for.

Lol, I googled it now just for kicks, and this FML is the third thing that comes up, after the website itself and some "trendytwits" thing. Well, at least you figured it out before you sent them the money!

Excerpts from that scam's web page: "We provide also chances for students" "Each year, outstanding students with different backgrounds and achievements are awarded." "Because NASC Honor Society a is highly selective" "Please contact [email protected] for any enquiries about the membership." "Regional and international community service Societys " "After we receive the membership payment, you will be accepted as a member officially." (what kind of honor society splits infinitives like that?!?!) "Is it a guarantee membership" (repeatedly) It doesn't seem like a lot, but there's barely anything on the site at all. Maybe 2 pages total in Word with 12 point font, with a lot of stuff repeated. Besides, every sentence reads like an 8th grade school paper: "Membership is a stamp of excellence that is recognized by graduate and professional school admissions committees and employers alike." I can understand if you missed that from being in a hurry but a rule of thumb is to never fill anything out without knowing exactly what's going on, unless you're about 5 minutes away from the deadline. You could've bookmarked it and looked around later on.

Lol. I received the EXACT SAME acceptance letter a few years back; however, I didn't apply for it. That must have been right before recent amendments to FERPA, so they probably just stole my address from the schools database. I will say that out of all the scams ever sent to me, this one was the most convincing looking. They really make it look professional.

#53, I guess the paper letter version is a lot more convincing than their website.

All I needed to read from the website was: "field of career paths" XD Isn't the only person who has a "field of career paths" a career counselor at a high school/college?

Ouch. I got invited to that too... But I looked at the website.. saw how much it cost to join..and just the website in general... and thought SCAM! Sorry you fell for it though, sucks. I hope you didn't actually pay them as your name implies with the almost scammed..

True story: Showing my boyfriend this FML just saved my boyfriend $68 - he just got invited three hours ago! Thanks for posting this and thank goodness you didn't pay for it!

... so you didn't lose any money and you're accepted to two other real honor societies. I'm sorry, how is this a fail? ALWAYS google before you apply to something.
