You should be in full control of your vehicle at any one time. If the person behind you hit you it is there fault. I would just say you missed a gear and then you should be fine.

My husband drives stick, and when he's bein sweet holdin my hand when he's drivin, he uses my hand to shift. Still hold hands, still driving. Win win.
