Today, I had to explain to my grandmother why, "What a nice singing voice! He doesn't sound black at all!" is not a compliment. FML

Grandparents always have the best racist compliments. My grandpa loves everyone, but hates every race. So he always says that person is a good insert racial epithet here after they leave.

I once had to tell my mom that saying "you're out of your cotton picking mind" was racist.

Most black people sing beautifully though...

You can't fix stupid, OP. Just kidding. She grew up in a different time and while it had preached ignorance, if explaining to her doesn't work to convince, just let it be and make sure she doesn't say those things, at least.

I'm not sure what was offensive here. Nothing she said indicated that she was racist. Elvis Presley was partly famous because he sang with the voice of a black man. It was just unexpected is all, maybe people need to stop looking for things that aren't there.

When I heard for the first time "Smalltown boy" by Bronski Beat I thought the singer was more or less like Aretha Franklin. 100% failed and when I saw Jimmy Sommerville I couldn't believe it.

a reference to Boston Legal? "Denny Crane..."

It was kind of a rude comment. Not everyone reacts the same. I'm over people saying others need to get "thicker skin" as an excuse to say anything they want to people. It's not about being "PC", it's about common decency. Maybe if people stopped being so rude to each other, things would be better.
