Today, I had to watch my neighbor's daughter for 10 hours. She wouldn't eat anything I had to offer, so I ordered a pizza for $19 + a $5 tip = $24. Her father came by to pick her up, thanked me, and gave me a $20 bill. I effectively just paid to watch his kid. FML

$20 for 10 hours is stupid. Why were you even willing to do something without knowing how much you'll get out of it?

Did you not know how much you were going to get paid? Dumb, always secure the cash first.

The kid ate the whole pizza itself? I doubt it. Also for 19$ can get like 2 large pizzas. No need to lie to us...

I woulda let the kid starve until she was ready to actually eat something, like it or not. You deserved it for not having any backbone.

You babysat for 10 hours and only got 20 bucks out of it? That's ridiculous. That's waaaay below minimum wage. No one works for 2 dollars an hour.

Ok, so I understand the utter failure on the part of the father to compensate fairly for time spent watching his kids. However, there is a responsibility on the part of the babysitter to pre-arrange a payment plan with the family s/he is babysitting for. If you do no such thing and automatically expect to be paid what you think you should be paid, you're being a fool. People will do whatever they can to save a buck if they can get away with it, especially in today's economy. There have been a couple of FMLs about the same sort of thing happening to other babysitters.

They should have set a price with you beforehand, definitely. But just for a head's up: please get the parents' permission to order food next time - or establish rules/boundaries in that aspect. Most parents I know agree that if you offer a kid healthy foods and they choose not to eat, you're hardly abusing them if they go hungry. Honestly, if they're hungry that's their problem :-D
