When you ask something in a joking manner expect many answers to be delivered in a similar manner. Unless, of course, the "joke" was a thinly veiled insecure question and you were fishing for reassurance. But you wouldn't do that, OP, would you? Either way, it sounds like your boyfriend was making a joke himself.
