Today, I learned that my building never received my rent check. Now not only do I have to pay a $40 late fee, but also a $40 fee to stop the payment of the check that went god knows where. FML

Sounds to me like your renter just wants more money. Next time, deliver it in person.

$40 fee to cancel a check? isn't it a bit expensive? and since when do you get late rent fees? that also happens to be $40.. sounds either fake, or you live in a weird place..

Here's what you do: Wait as long as possible to pay either fee. See if the check gets cashed. If it isn't cashed after a few weeks, then the check probably got lost. Pay your landlord the $40 fee and move on. If it is cashed, and it's from the landlord, send her a very disgruntled e-mail. If it is cashed, and it's not from the landlord, call the bank to complain and see if they can track the bastard down.

your bank is gay. they shouldnt charge you for having to stop a payment. oh well fyl

your bank sucks. they shouldn't charge you for stoping a check. fyl bro

every bank charges a fee for a stop payment on a check so don't start calling someone a liar unless you know what you're talking about dipshit

Thats why I love my hometown credit union. No fee to cancel a check, among other things. And really, who uses checks anymore? If its a big complex you should be able to pay via card. Otherwise, pay in person with cash. That way you won't have these mishaps occurring.

YDI for using such an insecure way of payment. Wire the f-cking money the next time.

doesnt is suck the fines that banks dish out? as a safty measure, you need to cancel the check, and they make you PAY for that. oh but lets bail out all the big banks that'll work
