Depending on how old the kid is, it isn't really a big deal. Three years or younger? Probably would happen all the time, you can't really tell, and unless you've been visiting said friend and playing with his daughter, it's a forgivable mistake. My friend's two year old boy gets mistaken for a girl all the time because of his hair. However, older than that... it's kind of awkward.
