I figured one of two things would happen: 1. He was in the same area we got separated or 2. He went back to the car. I chose to search the first option before getting a phone call that somebody found my dog. He has 3 ways to id him: dog park tag, name tag, and microchipped. It was the park tag that somebody had called on.

lol well that's good news
I think the real question here is why did you give up and return to the car?

what is a park tag? Google is not helpful.
Mine did this to me not long ago, first time he's left my sight. I only had forward or back though, so I reached the next muddy patch, no foot prints so walked back. Thank god for dogs who are clever enough to return to cars!
I've been there OP!!! My dog used to do the same only I would find him with someone else sharing their snacks with him!!!! Thank God your Pup is intelligent!
Aww well it worked out in the end. Our dog got out of the backyard once and we found him sitting at the front door waiting to be let in.
Glad you found him. :)
I sure hope you weren't looking too hard...I figured he would be around that area...
It's a message to never leave the comfort of air conditioning again
My dog did the same thing as a puppy. We were walking in the woods and it started raining (she hates walking in rain) and all of a sudden she ran off. Well we spent ages looking for her and I went back to the car to find her sat there waiting to get in.
LEASHES. Y U NO USE THEM?
A lot of dogs are trained to walk off leash for hiking. You ever try hiking along with an excited dog trying to smell everthing? I hike with my dog off leash all the time. Its different from being in the city.

At least you found him OP. You have a very smart dog.
Smart dog. S/he knows exactly where to go back to when you lost each other
