I'm going to have to say YDI... I'm a young female (23) and even I know to stand out there and watch them work on my car to be sure they're doing what they say they are going to do. But they need to fix it as it was their fault. Good luck.
Most places have a sign on the door that don't allow anyone other than employees pass to be in the work area.. Don't know where you go where they allow such a thing to happen. It can be dangerous enough with just the employees out there without annoying customers standing over their shoulders
the shop WILL fix it . the mechanic will be out of a job and or pay for it . there are only a few shops out there that will k
It might be tougher to get that done than you'd think- my sister was borrowing my car once, and I told her she either needed to wait for me to get the oil changed before she took it, or she needed to get it changed- she went to get it changed, and they didn't put the cap back on after putting the oil in, and she was on the highway with about 8 miles to go before the next exit when the light came on...so the engine died. It was a HUGE hassle to get the shop that changed the oil to do anything about it, even though it was clearly their fault, as they still had the cap! and to everyone saying you should watch them- some places you really can't get back there to see it- you can't stand next to them for safety reasons, and if there isn't a window or something, you just have to trust that they do the job they're trained to do.
Why did it take you 5 minutes to notice the light was on? If there was no oil in the engine, the light would have been on immediately when you started the car. Five minutes is a long time to drive without any oil, and a very long time to "notice" that an oil light is on. If you're THAT slow, you probably shouldn't be driving on public roads.
there are very few shops that will keep that tech
Was that shop Midas? Repeat! http://www.fmylife.com/money/5488645
Nope, it's just fine. Don't get your panties in a twist.
the shop has to pay the damages...
This happened to me almost a year ago. We had taken our car to a nationally-recognized chain and they didn't pull oil back in the car, which we realized when the engine shut down less than half a block away (and no check-engine light came on beforehand). After a lot of going back and forth, they fired the guy who did the oil "change" and offered to either pay for a new engine or give us a check for the amount it would cost to fix it, probably so we wouldn't sue them. We elected to use the check as a down payment on a new car. Just thought you might want to know that this has happened to at least one more person!

It was their mistake, their damage, they'll cover the cost. Bring it up to them with proof, escalate the problem if needbe, and go to court if it gets that far (it won't, they'll fix it).
They should be willing to compensate for that, but FYL for having to wait for that process to be complete.
