I see the following possibilities: 1. he's actually straight and OP is misinterpreting things 2. he's not gay, he's bisexual, which means he's into girls too and he's not yet ready to admit he's into guys as well 3. he is gay, but hasn't yet come to terms with his sexuality and he naively hopes that if he dates enough girls, maybe he'll find one he's attracted to 4. he knows he's gay, but he's afraid to come out. I can understand that, but still it's selfish of him to lead those girls on.

The wording of the FML implies the friend is a guy. If the friend was a woman, she wouldn't be very 'closeted' since the friend is openly dating women
