Today, I received a letter in the mail stating that I had won a trip to Cancun, Mexico. It looked like a scam so I threw it away. I later found out that it was a birthday present from my cousin and the envelope also contained a check for 5 thousand dollars to help cover some expenses. FML

I went to Cancun about 10 days ago. Really pretty place. Too bad you won't see it. Unless you dig it out of the trash.

Your cousin shouldn't have made it look like junk mail.

It's the cousin's fault. He should have delivered the gift by hand, put a return address sticker - anything to make it clear it's from him. For all the OP knew, it was a well-crafted scam. Personally, i'm not going to waste my time reading scam/junk mail. Another note: The letter said the OP "won" something he didn't even sign up for. Classic indicator of junk mail. Any legit person *should* know enough not to follow the same patterns. This is also not really an FML. Tickets can be reprinted and checks can be rewritten.

If it was a check, can't he just send it again?

Clearly your cousin is an idiot and they can cancel the check and write you a new one. I hope you can get all the travel info back though :(

I would have thought it was a scam, too. But shouldn't the letter have had a return address label on it?
