Today, I received a terrible grade for an essay I worked really hard on. I had two friends, one being an English major, check it over. However, apparently I "clearly didn't use spellcheck" on this essay just like the last one I submitted to her. FML

Same thing different taste

Underfunded and underappreciated

Today, I got back the essay I wrote about how my country's education system is fucked. At one point, I made a spelling mistake. My teacher wrote a note about it, basically calling me illiterate, and telling me to pay attention in school instead of whining about it. She misspelled "school". FML

Either she chose the wrong major, of you need new friends

I once had something similar happen to me, but with much worse implications. When I was a freshmen in college, the English class which we took depended on the grade which we got for the essay on the SAT or ACT. I got 6 out of 12, so I was placed into Basic Writing Skills which is a remedial class. The grade to get into the normal English class is 7 out of 12, so i was one point away for being ion the normal class. On the first day of Basic Writing Skills, the professor gave us a placement test, and if we passed the test we would have been placed in the normal class. The placement test involved us being asked to write a shore essay on one question. The professor gave us the question and I started writing. I made sure that my paragraphs and sentences were well organized, but when I handed it in to the professor this is what he said. "This is so close, but I have to fail you because you for got to answer the second part of the question." I reread the question, and I saw that there was a second part which I hadn't noticed. I asked the [professor if I could retake the test, but he said no. I asked him if I could take a new test with a different question, but he said no. I was placed in Basic Writing Skills where all we talked about was paragraph and sentence structure, but the professor admitted that I knew paragraph and sentence structure. I didn't learn anything in that class because I already knew how to write at a college level. The final exam was exactly the same as the placement test but with a different question. Needless to say, I passed, but since it was a remedial class it did not count toward my GPA, and I still had to take the regular class the next semester. If i had been given the final exam on the first day of class, I guarantee I would have passed it. The professor simply didn't understand that Basic Writing Skills was unnecessary for me since it was simply a fluke that I misread the question and only answered part of it. Had the professor let me retake the placement test, I would not have wasted a semester in a remedial class which I did not need.

So maybe you should read and answer questions in their entirety in the future? It sucks you had to learn that the hard way, but that really is basic writing.

I did use spellcheck. I also looked over it, and had two friend do so as well. I don't see what she means by I didn't use spellcheck. As far as I can see there are no spelling errors.

There are grammatical errors that would have shown up with the green line underneath them (assuming you didn't turn off the grammar check function). Perhaps your teacher used "spell check" as the generic, understood term for "spelling and grammar check". I have found that a lot of people ignore those green lines, or automatically accept the changes, without really understanding what the grammar check is pointing out. Just like with spell check, you have to actually read and check what you wrote before you allow grammar check to change it. Grammar check isn't always right.

I have that on still. Perhaps its something I'm not catching. I just went over her comments, my friend pointed out that she made a spelling error in her remarks as well.

You're the one responsible for your grades, not your friends. Use spellcheck and learn to proofread and edit your papers yourself.

That's like saying that you are responsible for any down votes you get because you should learn to read previous comments before posting. Otherwise you would know that OP did actually proof read and use spell check as well as have her friends go over it.

Two possible courses of action: 1) Does your college/university have a writing center/tutoring center? If so, have them check your paper for errors and correct anything accordingly. For most colleges, the tutors/helpers have to report to the professors that they helped with a student's work, so at least your professor will know that you did attempt to correct the essay. That may help ease her contentious (and frankly unprofessional) attitude toward you. 2) Is this a paper that expresses a controversial viewpoint? Your professor may disagree with your point, and is merely using the "spellcheck" thing as an excuse to downgrade you. (I speak from experience, unfortunately.) The only way to find out is to meet with her individually (like during office hours), if she's available. Showing initiative by meeting with her will prove that you're not lazy and that you're truly interested in improvement. :)

are you writing this on stone tablets? there is no excuse for spelling errors. this is your fault. it is ok. some people are just not good at life.
