Today, I regretfully confessed to my parents I have trichotillomania. There was a torturous pause, followed by the question, "Are you gay?" FML

Hold on while I google trichotillomania...

OP get some help for that! It's not good for your hair, it's pretty gross darn gross, and it's not very appealing for anyone to see! For those of you who are wondering: Trichotillomania- is the compulsive urge to pull out (and in some cases, eat) one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment

Quite a hairy situation you must be in, OP - your parents really need to get out of your hair on this one. I know all this must irk you to no end, but just take caution not to get to the point of pulling your hair ou-- ...ooh, a tad too late. (Note to Self: Thank the lord for watching that one episode of Scrubs. And they say TV is bad for you!)

I had trichotillomania too :/ Horrible disorder. My father was a very cruel and mentally ill man who made me miserable on a daily basis and as a result I'd pull out my bangs. It was so bad that in middle school I had bald patches. Eventually that evolved to me cutting myself and it took a lot for me to get help. Good luck OP! It truly does get better I promise!

I've got trich, too, been struggling with it since I was 8. It's definitely no fun, but there are a lot of support groups. OP, Check out trichworld.com. :)

OP when I was in elementary school I had something similar where I pulled out all my eyebrows and eyelashes but, I eventually stopped somehow after five or more years of doing so. You should try going to therapy it may help you uncover what's making you feel you have to pull out your hair and help you stop or express it in a healthy way. OP I hope this helped a little and don't be afraid to get help. ;)

well. They could pronounce "gay". They couldn't pronounce "triska...", "tricka", ... "tricholico..." Are you gay???

Wow... Horrible parents... Hope you found some help and group support soon. Good Luck OP! Hope you can beat it!

Wow that has nothing to do with trichotillomania, why would they say that, even if it was a joke it wouldn't make sense, and reading the description for trichotillomania made me cringe a bit, sorry to hear about that op

I wonder how many people had to Google that word to find out what it meant lol I know I did!
